MELANIE GARCIA
Melanie Garcia is a Filipina/Canadian mixed media collage artist concerned with unconscious and liminal spaces, existentialism, the body and its connections to a place or the environment.
Inspired by poetic cinema and surrealism, Melanie uses collage as a way to process personal queries by exploring the metaphysical, mythmaking, and memory. Dreamlike narratives are created with found photos, image transfers, paper ephemera and mark making. Doorways are recurring symbols of place and transition suggesting new passageways or in-between states. When merging abstract forms, natural elements and human figures, she constructs places that are somewhere as much as nowhere, questioning a place of belonging.
Her works have been exhibited in Canada, Netherlands, Iceland, and Norway. When not pushing around little pieces of paper, Melanie offers art workshops to youth in and around Tiohtià:ke/Montreal.
